So the wife and I were sitting down last night, just talking and relaxing like we do when I decided to pop the question.
The question was, can I use the baby's old Power Wheels truck and turn it into a Power Racer? I showed her some video's on YouTube to get her more interested and told her a little about what it is and I got a YES!
So here are my questions to you, the Oppo's of my life. What should I do? How far should I go? Should I go with a specific theme? Should I sport a Jalopnik Sticker (because we all know I'm gonna rock an Oppo sticker)? Any idea's for the type of wheels? Type of battery? Basically, this is going to be insanely fun!

To google. Draw up build plans and seek further approval from the queen.

I might stick some wheelbarrow wheels on it, or at least some sort of rubber tires. Might be able to double the voltage by adding a second battery in series or do a gas engine conversion with a 2-stroke or a lawnmower engine.

Buy a 6.5hp motor at harbor freight. of course that would mean building a frame basically a whole go kart with a power wheel body. Or use a mini atv. basically I want to be just like these guys.

6hp single cylinder engine at harbor freight is like 100bux, probably less with coupons. They have some 3 dollar rubber tires for sale. Get a clutch or trans system and go demolishing. Old bed frames re purposed as the frame on it. Have fun and don't get hurt.

I wanted to go with a gas engine. but the rules state that they can only be powered by electric batteries.

I'm envisioning your wife posting on whatever group she posts to:
So my husband wants to build one of these "Power Racer" things. I told him he could. Anyone know a good insurance agent, I need to see about a life insurance policiy.

According to the rules, I can on;y have a maximum of a 36V battery (they say 12 to 36 volt max) so I was thinking of getting a few cheap 12V laptop batteries and hooking them up together.

Jalopnik did a story on it not to long ago and had a video in it but just go to either http://www.powerracingseries.com or search Power Racing Series on YouTube.

Ha ha it's probably true! Good thing the Air Force has a good insurance payout if I die!

I was thinking more along the lines of lawnmower batteries, although I'm not sure which will have the better lifespan or charging times.

I never even thought of grabbing a lawnmower battery. They probably have longer life and better torque than a laptop battery. Nice!

And one race is 10 minutes down the street from me at the henry ford museum!

Yea. That's the hard part for me. I'm in Alaska. Maybe I'll get moved to a place closer by with my next assignment!

i wish they had a race in the south. the closest to me is the new york race, 12 hours away. your main expense is going to be batteries, motor, and controller. to be competitive your probably looking at around 36-48 volts. you can save money by finding a cheap electric wheelchair or even better a golfcart or full size road legal electric scooter for the motor and controller. other than that its standard go kart construction. Can you weld? if not it might be time to learn or make friends with a welder. if you want to look cool try to find a viper like mine:
or a corvette c5r:
